Default built d30 axle

Hi all, I have broken the ring and pinion on my d30 and I know someone who is selling his with 4.88 gears sleeves gussets arb locker and chromolly axles, he doesn't know what it is worth and I don't know what to offer, it has done about 20k km, what would be a reasonable price?

Its basically worth what the locker and gears cost. I would say $1500 would be at the top range of a price I would pay for the axle if those are the gears you need.

Well I currently have 5.13 and was planning to go back down to 4.56 and put an e-locker in the rear but since this came up I thought it would work out cheaper to get this and change the rear gears to 4.88
I would also weld on a truss to this as my current one also has one.
And i don't like that I can't put the outer axle seals on because it has sleeves. Maybe I should give it a miss and stay with my original plan. Honestly I was thinking of offering 1k AUD (I'm in Australia) in my opinion and experience second hand parts are worth nothing.

What size tires are you running? The ring and pinion size is the weakest link in a D30, especially when you regear to a lower ratio which wil have more teeth, which are finer, and obviously even less durable. Add a locker and you have the potential for bad. I personally would invest in a D44, even with 35's, but if you can pick up the D30 for cheap, then by all means give it a shot and be sensible with it off road.

It is important to note that using a heavier diff cover also prevents gear deflection (housing flexing allowing the teeth of the ring and pinion to skip).. this will prolong the life of both the D30 and D44.

I sold a very similar D30 with Artec truss/gusset fully welded on and the Artec armor kit, E-Locker, 4.88 gears, brakes and bearings. I got $1,100 for it after bartering with the guy a bit, I was asking $1,400 and he wasn't feeling it. In the end, I was just happy to turn it into cash.

Just my opinion, but someone with a built D30 is never going to get the full value they put in to it. It’s going to be worth only what someone will pay them for it. The market in Australia is probably a decent bit different in regards to supply and demand. I’d think if it’s in good shape, USD 1k – 1250 (AUD 1350 - 1700) might be a little closer to an actual "fair" price. Offering AUD 1,000 as a starting point wouldn’t be outrageous if you don’t think the guy would get butt hurt and walk away. Problem is that a used D30 is probably about USD 300-400, has a ~ USD 1k locker in it, and they’ve paid for re-gear and sleeves……so seller might have a hard time getting over what they’ve really paid for the axle. Makes me glad that I swapped to a Rubi D44 rather than building up my old D30 when I came to that bridge.

I'm running 35s with 5.13 gears now, I will move up to 37s but still think the 5.13 is to low for me. I'll probably look into getting a 44 for the front and changing my ratios to 4.56 for added strength.
I would love to just put in dana 60s but at 20k AUD I'll have to give it a miss.
