Default Bump stop questions??

I have a 5" Skyjacker lift and the bumostops appear to be 3-4" inside the coil. I was flexing this weekend and noticed that I am hitting the bumpstop a little early. My 35s have 6-7" before the top of the fender. My questions is, is there anyway to shorten the bumpstops while they are inside the coil, or will i have to remove the coil. Also do they really need to be that long? If I shorten the BS will it damage something by flexing to much. Thank you in advance for all help.

You need to search for the reasoning behind bumpstops but I'll summarize. It keeps the tire from molesting your flare and keeps the shock from bottoming out.

Now, with those 2 pieces of information you can determine if you need more or less bumpstop. If your shocks aren't meant to compress that far, then yes- you need every inch of it.

How to test......take the coils out and see what it does. As to shortening the stops- that depends on how the bumpstops are affixed and what they're made of. A sawzall could work if you're careful but removing the coil is the best way to go.

If you find yourself hitting the bumpstops often then look at air bs or maybe sumosprings.

It only hits when Im odviously at full flex, but also at slow trail riding if one tire drops in deep hole. They appear to be made of a hard rubber, I just wanted to make sure they where not the tall as a way to cover skyjacker for damaging something.

Also at ride height from the ball to the top of the bs is 2'' surely with a 5'' lift you could get more than 2'' of articulation.

Yeah, a 5" lift should be more than 2" of travel......I guess skyjacker is planning on more downtravel than uptravel. Measuring the shocks and bumpstops is going to be the only way to figure out what you "need".

I said fcuk it and run no additional bumpstop but longer shocks for more travel. I'm not terribly concerned with touching the flare and if I blow a shock out on my sparce trips then I'll take that hit.

That is what I have been toying around with is just removing them. I heard through the grape vine that I will be getting Smittybuilt armor flares soon and like you if I bust a shock oh well, chock one up to a battlefield casualty
