What is the purpose of a "STINGER" the big loop on a front bumper ?

keeps you from rolling over forward when you're descending.

Ya know the big extensions on drag racers in the back that keep their front end from flying up? Kinda the same concept, but opposite and in the front.

The PURPOSE is to keep the jeep from doing an endo if you exceed the magic angle of tipoverness. (that's a real word look it on on wikipedia). It will also let you cross bigger gaps that would eat a lesser equiped jeep. If you are willing to scratch your big stinger.

The reason you see as many as you do is men like having big hard projections on thier rigs.
