i suppose you could scuff and paint yourself. still gonna cost a little bit but not nearly as much as a shop. not really sure how it would come out with. not really a big fan of painted flairs but i have seen a few jeeps pull it off really well.
I just installed the flat ones painted (body colored) on my '13 JKU, Love the way they came out. The flat style do not come painted from bushwacker, only the pocket ones do. I don't know why they don't offer the flat ones pre painted.
Some advice on having them painted, use a body shop that has experience painting plastic pieces. These need to be sanded properly, otherwise there will be a reaction with the paint (looks kind of hairy, like fuzz).

We I was running the Bushwacker Flat Fenders I wanted them painted as well but the quotes I received were for $700 for the set.
What I found out was that the prep time was the biggest expense because the surface and release agents used or whatever coating is on them needed to be removed. I tried doing the prep myself and ruined them because you can easily over do the scuffing and get flat spots. I ended up bedlining them which looked awesome but slowly flaked off. Hope this message isn't a buzz kill because I really think painting them is the way to go and if you have some experience then or find a shop that can do them cheaper it would be worth it.
