I just installed an Airaid CAI yesterday and wonder if I should avoid mud and deep water all together since there is greater risk of hydrolock....
I have heard many people talking of the increased danger and some who actually reinstall the factory intake when the are going on trails they know has deep water.
Now I am not sure with the air raid but my k&n came with a splash and heat sheild that appers to protect well.
I have ran through a puddle of about 10 to 15 inches deep with no prob.
I would say though try at your own risk and know there is an increased chance of hydrolocking.

Bull!!!! I had a Airaid on till Just recently I put on a snorkel and I went in to deep water and it was just fine! But now in Florida it is so wet the water is over my flairs that is why I put a snorkel on. Look at the my photos and you will see what I did with the Airaid on..

yes the risk is higher. Popular belief says you have to submerge a filter in water to hydro lock and thats false. First off if you put a filter completely only water your engine would choke and die from lack of air (simple test, unload a can of TB cleaner while reving the engine and it will bog down and die). I have seen numerous cars hyrdo lock from running through puddles with CAI installed. There was a splash gaurd below the filter but still running through a 2 or 3 inch puddle created enough splash for water to get sucked in. it doesnt take a whole lot of water to do some good damage.
Im not saying your going to hydro lock with an open filter intake, the possibility is a LITTLE bit greater, thats all. I know my stock box is pretty dirty on the outside from dirt and water getting splashed on it

3.8 liter engine, 9.6:1 compression ratio, six cylinders... Means about 4 tablespoons of water in one cylinder can really REALLY wreck your day. Doesn't take much of a splash to equal 4 tablespoons!

I can recall a certain trip where we were splashing through rivers and the only one of us that stalled was the one with the CAI. Now, my guess is that if he had had a snorkel like mrsig, he wouldn't have had a problem. But, he didn't and the water did splash into the CAI and stalled his engine. With that said, it wasn't much water and he was back up and running in just a couple of minutes.
