Question CAI question

What is the risk of damaging the engine with a CAI from off-road use - i.e. filling that sucker full of water or mud, etc.? I see a lot of people putting them on anyway, but as I am stuck east of the Mississippi for the foreseeable future and will be dealing with a lot more mud than rock, I am a little hesitant to remove the stock filter.

Disclaimer: I am completely new to this stuff and have only the vaguest notion of how it all works.

Thanks!

If I may, I would like to piggy back your question with my own question on CAI and I am new to this stuff too.

I have read various posts that state that fuel economy increases after installing a CAI (I am considering the AIRAID). Not being a mechanic, why does this set up increase the fuel economy? I saw someone say that it increased fuel economy by more than 3 mpg, is that a fairly safe number to use in considering such an upgrade?

As always, thanks in advance.

i don't know how accurate 3mpg is. but engine needs air to breathe to work. shoveling much more air in helps it do the more work with less effort. hence the fuel economy boost and power gains.

I have the airaid.as far as mpg i got maybe 1/2 mpg better.but the throttle response is improved.the CAI is only one part you may also want to open up the exhaust some.

Thanks for the info guys. Maybe I read something wrong. I can't complain about my mpg as, on my second tank of gas with mixed highway and in town driving I am averaging 19.4 (accourding to computer).

Still considering the Airaid at somepoint though.

I have an aev cold air intake in my TJ and havnt had a wholelot of trouble with mud. I take the air filter off every other oil change and tap it on the ground to get the loose stuff out and its been ok. One advantage of the high flow air filters over oem replacement ones is that they are made of cotton vs. paper. So if they get wet, they dont turn into mush.

To really get the most out of the better air flow, pair it with a high flow exhaust. More air coming in means you'll need to get more air out. With the CAI, throttle body spacer, high flow exhaust, i gained about 6 mpg and a noticable change in performance.

What throttle body spacer did you use for the JK? I haven't seen one yet from the manufacturers listing exclusively JK parts...

I was talking about my TJ, sorry. I'm hoping that when aev releases their cai kit for the JK it will include the throttle body spacer like the TJ kit.

I had the same concerns... so I ordered the Volant CAI instead -- which has a box around it and has similar gains. I had this on my Tahoe before getting the Jeep, and was very satisfied with it.

Quadratec has it listed in their catalog, but I had to put in the part number to find it on their site -- I ordered it but it's on backorder... Part # is 17013.403 If you have the 2007 Spring Edition catalog, it's on page 210.

Also, Volant makes the Periscoop which attaches to their CAI, but it's not available for the JK at this time... I'm hoping they release one that can be attached to this CAI like the previous model years did.

Is that the type of setup that you can connect the snorkel inside when you need it, and disconnect (but leave it attached) when you don't?

I may be upgrading to the volant after the snorkel is available if this is the case. Anyone interested in a used Airaid?
