Default Calling all Re-Gear-ers- INFORMATION PLEASE!

i own an 07 JK Unlimited X with a manual transmission. im not 100% yet but i believe i have 3.21 gears (the may be 3.73 but the tags fell off so i gotta throw it up on a jack and find out)

im thinking of re-gearing to 4.88 however, this is my DD which is just shy of 50 miles a day for work however, i still make it an off roader at least once a month. i know regearing will help on the trail. the upgrades i have are (overall) not throwing "that much" weight on the jeep really alli want is more low end torque off road and normal (if not better) driving on highway ratios. if i re-gear, whats the best ratio? i keep hearing that if i go to 4.11 il regret not going to 4.56 and if i go 4.56 ill regret not going to 4.88.im only running 33's which do more than expected both on and off road.

what is practical is a re-gear as a DD????

And as much as i would love to have transfer cases...yeah!!!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (wish i could)

In '07, the manual transmission would have come with 3.21 or 4.10. Those were the only two ratios offered.

If you never plan to go bigger than 33. Do 4.56.

Many may disagree, but that works great for my DD with 315/70/17 duratracs. 4.88 is too much for 33s imo.

I agree with this. 4.88s if you plan on larger than 35s. 4.88s would be a little low for 50 miles a day with 33s. Depends on how fast your driving... My question would be-what's the fastest you drive your jeep consistently? I don't drive faster than 75 ever. And 35s are as large as I plan on going, so 4.88s put me right at 3000 rpms at that speed. I'm happy with what I got. I think 4.56 would be great with 33s or 35s as much as your driving. If your driving 50 miles a day at 60 then I'd go ahead and put the 4.88 in there.

4.88s with 33s here. 70 mph at 2400. Mostly in town. Best mod to date.

I had an 07 with 6 SPF. I ran 4.88 and 35's. it was way too much gear for a dd. I ran close to 3k rpm in 6th at 70mph. It was great for offroad and ok for around town but no good on the highway. Look at the gear charts. I didn't understand what I was looking at when I made my choice then. I'm on my second rig now and I used the gear chart and was able to make a much more suitable gear choice.

I have a 2009 unlimited Rubicon (manual transmission) and had 33" KM2s with the factory 4.10 gears. Sixth gear wasn't ever that great. I geared to 4.88 in prep for 35s and had the 33s for a few months with the new gears. On the highway at 75 mph I was turning around 3200 rpm in sixth gear. I normally don't cruise on the highway at the speed but it was nice to set the cruise and be able to keep it in sixth gear. It probably would have been too much if I was on the highway everyday. Around town it was great with the added pep.

With the 35s the 4.88 gearing is perfect for me.

If you're never going over 33s maybe 4.56 is better for you. If you're like most Jeepers you'll end up going larger than 33s.

i agree with most of the replies above... go with 4.56 for your DD and 33" tires. i have 4.88, running on 35" tires, manual trans, and frankly it's a little too much gear at freeway speeds in 6th gear. trust me. but that's not to say i regret going to 4.88 because eventually i plan on 37" tires or bigger and i'm not spending that money again to regear.

typical driving rate of speed on the highway is between 60-70. i barely ever touch 6th gear and in 5th gear at about 65 im hovering right around 2800 rpm. and im sure down the road ill eventually put 35's on but it'll wait till the tires i have now (hercules m/t 33'') are run into the ground.
