LEDs do not put out as much candle power as a filament or arc discharge light.
LEDs do put out a nice even light spread with little color variation. The LEDs that are powerful enough to put out light at a distance need to be heavily cooled.
I would suggest using LED for rock lights or short distance lighting. The best light to light up a great distance are HIDs or spot lights. There are some LED lights that are definitely better than stock headlights, but I wouldn't use them for distance...
I use Eagle Eye (cheap) HID spot lights and it lights up everything for a half mile or more. A higher end spot light like the light force will blow my EE lights away.
