Default Which Carrier do I need

Replacing the stock X Dana 44 carrier to add a Powertrax locker.

Do I need the carrier from the Dana 44 3.37 and higher to fit?
I have 4.10 gears now, and will keep them. I have heard that because our gears are thicker, we need the opposite carrier than the ratio would normally call for.

Can anyone confirm/clarify?

Thanks!

I'm not much help, but curious where you heard that from? I checked out richmond gears site, the makers of the powertrax. They dont even have any applications listed for jeep after 2000, also they dont even make ring n pinion sets for our jk's either. I would call them and ask. Also the 3.37 and higher carrier woudl fit the 4.10 so I dont get that

not certain...so at least a bump to the top for others...but I think your just fine with your stock X's carrier PROVIDING it's an open carrier, all your doing with the powertrax unit is replacing the guts of your stock carrier with the powertrax locker...alot like an Ausie locker

from their website...
D. Remove the stock side and spider gears and the thrust washers that are on the these gears.
E. Install the Lock-Right gears in place of the original side and spider gears. The thrust washers are re-used. If the vehicle uses c-clips they are put back in place.

I have the limited slip, so the carrier has to go.

As I understand that I need to clarify:

For non-JK Dana 44s, there are different thicknesses in gear sets depending on the gear ratio. These differences require a different carrier, of which there are two. Because of the different thickness in the 4.1 ring gear in the JK D44, the other (higher ration, numerically lower) carrier is needed for a replacement carrier.

It seems there is not a lot of help in the aftermarket "auto locker" world for the JK yet, but it can be done with other parts.

Even if I went with a Detroit....Do I need to order a 30 spline D44 unit for a higher ratio because of the thickness of the stock 4.1 ring gear?

I know there are experts here that have done it and know...

I appreciate that! I have a buddy that has one of each so I am good.

I just hope he can find them in his garage...
