Default Catalytic Converter Theft

Well on Friday I came back to my 2011 Jeep at the Park'N"Ride (public transportation parking lot South Hills, PA) and some pice of sh.. crackhead cut the catalytic converter off the passenger side of my Jeep. Sawzaw I'm guessing with metal blade. I've always worried about the wheels and tires and other things being taken but not the Cat (though I've heard of it happening). Cops said its usually Meth or crackheads looking to scrap it for quick money. Wish I could have caught them but cops said it takes them a minute or two to cut it out. There were other trucks and cars around so I'm guessing they know the JK has easy access. Hows this happened to anyone else? Was wondering if the 3.6 motor's converters are as vulnerable to theft as the passenger side one on the 3.8? Been thinking about getting a 2014 four door. Has anyone have a good idea for protection? I'm thinking about skid plate but not sure which would cover it enough to protect and what might stop them from just taking the plate off and stealing both for scrap metal! Just a warning to all to be careful.

The scrap yard companies that take in the catalytic converters for money are just as big of crooks as the crack heads that are stealing the cats. Total BS.

Dang that sucks!

You'd think the park and ride would have a camera somewhere monitoring the vehicles.

I guess you could put a skid plate on it. might help:

Out in the country where I live there have been instances of cat converter thefts in broad daylight while the vehicle sits in the driveway. Houses are isolated so plenty of B&E's too. They knock on the door and if no one answers they break in. If someone answers then they ask for directions or some other BS. Almost always someone driving 30 miles out of the big cities.

That is one reason I keep all our vehicles in the garage/polebarn. I now have driveway sensors, cameras, house alarm, and a 12 gauge with 3.5" steel shot shells. I would not shoot a person outside the house but I am not sure I would not get pissed and let them make their getaway on 2 flat tires. Probably go to jail for it though.

They want my stuff then they had better be quick about it.

Default theft

I carry a $100 deductible on my jeep, just for crap like this.

a while back they were stealing man hole covers!

Not that I'd personally, ever do such a thing, but can you believe they also took your rear soft windows, and even the spare tire? I mean, jeeze... they really stripped it...

Yeah these people are pieces of shit. Wish I could have caught them in the process. Wouldn't shoot them because I would probably be the one going to jail but wouldn't have thought twice about running them over.

Do you think the skip plate would cover it enough to keep them from cutting it? I figured I could install it with permanent lock tite and tightening it to the point you need an impact to remove. I just don't want them taking off the skid plate and stealing it too!!

If they’re looking for quick options in a parking lot maybe the skid plate would “add enough time” to make them move on to another vehicle? I’m thinking of doing this too. Cat converter theft where I live has gone out of control.
I agree with your perspective on whether we can shoot these assholes but I really, really would like to put a round in their leg for it.

Also, I could be wrong here but I thought the 3.6 engines eliminated the 3rd cat? (they still have the 2 near the manifold). So this should make them “not a target” for crackheads and other assholes looking to quickly steal cat converters?
