Default Changed differantial oil

Ok I changed my gear oil today since I drove my 500 miles for the new gears. The rear was a darkish gray color coler with a shine to it. The front was still gold in color. Why did the front still look new. Did my front gears get broken in. I did get more metal on the front magnet then I did the rear. Is this normal.

Do you have a Limited Slip Rear and standard front? If so then the color is different fluids front and rear. Your rear is special fluid for LSD, front is just basic gear oil. As for the filings, I don't really have an answer for that, but I could make one up if you would like

I experience this on my jeep which has been used in 4x4 mode. I use the same synthetic fluid front and rear with no addnl LSD additive. I attribute the rear fluid discoloration to LSD clutch pack wear. The only other difference between the two diffs is front is D30, rear D44. Another comment here is the increased loading on the rear diff because you are not always in 4x4, that possibly is the reason too.

I recently changed the diff fluid on front and rear axles with my jeep having 15K miles and the back was jet black the front was a dark gold. I just figured it was because more stress on the rear as I do average more 2wd then 4wd

Most diff oil includes the LSD additive these days. I know Mobil 1 does.

When you first get a Jeep, are you supposed to change the diff. oil before the 15,000 mile recommended interval? Is there a 500 mile break in interval for the gears on a new Jeep?

Only synthetic diff oil has the additive needed for LSD. If you run conventional you still need to put in the additive.
