Chromoly axles with u-joints?
So I am getting closer to upgrading my bent d30 to a pr44 unlimited and am contemplating on which axles to get. Obviously the rcv axles are stronger, but are they really worth the extra $$? I am the occasional weekend warrior wheeler who is not a rock crawler (yet). I am trying to keep this purchase as cheap as possible. I will be running a truetrac along with 4.88's with this setup. So would the chromoly axles suit me fine? What are the odds of snapping one?

Depends on tire size. Up to a 37 and not hammering the throttle you will have should have no problem with the chromo's. With that said you can always break an axle but the average wheeler easy on the throttle probably wont. I had a dana 44 with chromo's on my yj with 38.5 boggers and broke an axle shaft but I figured I would with the way I drive it.

That is not true. I broke a u joint pushing my left front tire onto a tree stump. The wheels had to be turned to the far right to navigate this obstacle. The wheels never lost traction. I barely touched the gas. The tach needle swung to 1500RPM and it went bang! The joints bound up , it ripped the star in half and busted the stub shaft ear right off.
The U joints are the same size for both the Superior and the ten factory. Both use the 760x. While a tad stronger than the OEM 297s but they still break with ease.
RCVs are totally worth the extra $$ not to have to ever deal with a broken U joint.

Superior has two series of axle shafts to offer (discovery and Evolution), From what I was told the lower grade axle shaft offers a smaller U-joint than the higher grade.
I am in agreement with you that the RCV's are a better way to go, kinda like ya get what ya pay for, but in sayin that I think there are plenty of people out there that have run regular axle shafts wih ujoints and have not had a problem, everybody runs there 4wheeler differently. Gotta watch what your doin while wheelin and take it easy on stuff.

Worth every penny to get RCV's.
We took the Rancho/Dynomax JK on 37 stickies up Carnage Canyon, and the driver barely hit an obstacle and snapped a u-joint.
Got it pulled and sent him back down in three wheel drive.
Last obstacle snapped the other axle AND took out the ball joints as well.
Another JK on the trip had a HEMI (6.4), 39's and a 44 with RCV's and BEAT it up, no problems.
Tack,tack, tack

Ten Factory are awesome shafts but they dont work for the Pro Rock 44 With Conventional Lockers . We have Chromoly Shafts made by "foote axle" that accept the larger u-joint and are chromoly for the Pro Rock 44.
