Default Clarification re Aftermarket Tops

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2-door JK. I received a hard top and a soft top when I purchased the JK.

I have read quite a few threads that discuss bikini tops and other types of aftermarket tops.

I am thinking that I would like to buy an additional top that I can run with the doors off and the soft top stowed away. I am thinking that I will have the soft top and windows in case of rain. I can use the aftermarket top as a bit of a sun screen, primarily. I'm not really concerned about closing in the rear compartment.

Is the bikini top the best way to go?

I am thinking that the mesh top would be best since we would get some shade.

Is there a different type of top we should be looking at?

Is there a particular brand that is built better (i.e. to last)?

Thanks for any opinions.

Jeff

My brother had a mesh bikini top for his 04... but to be honest, I just usually leave the soft top up, doors and windows off.

Gives a bit of shade (plenty of sun comes through the door-holes) and gives protection to my bald friends (since they can't wear the hat for more than 2 minutes with top down)

Soft top up, doors off acts like a bikini top of sorts... just a big one.

Curious to see what other people do... (I've seen a thread or two of people making their own mesh tops... looks kinda cool too)

Rearview of my rig with a mesh top. The top also stays on when I put up my soft top.

This is an interior pic towards the rear with the mesh top on.

When I first got mine, I had exactly the same thought....get an easy to put up top. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't. Honestly I find the factory soft top to be perfectly adquate and easy enough to put up and down now that I've had some practice.

Instead I ended up getting the 2 pc soft doors and havent' regretted it for a second. Now that the weather's warming up, the 100lb doors are in the shed and I can remove my doors in a second! Frankly I usually end up just doing that and leaving the top up. Sure they leak and flap around but I don't expect anything else so I love 'em!

Anyway, those are my thoughts. yours might vary!
