Default coilovers for dummies

Suppose I wanted to install coil-overs with a 3-4" lift.
If not a bolt-on kit, what route do you go for a simple coil-over setup to build from? Just coil-overs, not bypass or anything too fancy.
I have a welder, so adding a hoop and new lower mount is possible.
Looking to improve the ride off-road, but not brake the bank. I am familiar with the evo kits.
At this point I am just looking to educate myself on some options.

if you're saying you want front C/O's and you can weld then you have a # of options. Check out synergy, tribe, rebel, genright, or fabtech.
