Question Cold Air Intake Users Only

My head is spinning at all this CAI talk. I know its not a true cold air intake but it clearly moves more air into your intake.. its clear that coupled with a good exaust system there are some performance gains.

Once upon a time I used an airAid CAI.. i soon removed it.., the reason being that i was tired of it getting caked in mud and dirt.. mind you to airaids credit nothing got into the intake tube. but the filter was always a mess restricting airflow.

it seems to me that the only good Jk CAI's are the ones with some kind of cover.. IE: Volant, S&B, Banks, AFE,

it seems that AEM provides the most airflow and has a great low maintance filter but provides obsolutly no cover from mud at minor splashing

I want good airflow thats why i lean more towards these fake cold air intakes over a snorkle...

I am on the fence guys... what CAI should I use? or should I sacrafice airflow and i just snorkle this sucker?

Default AEM Brute

I am running the AEM Brute for two reasons. 1st- It was cheap (used for $25) 2nd- It doesn't use OIL.

I ran the AIRAID on my TJ and did not like the way it caked with dirt, weeds, and misc. bugs. I added a 'pre-filter' and that helped prevent the caking but limited air flow some.

I got a Gibson dual outlet muffler for $25. I put that on first and immediately noted more power than stock. I then added the AEM and realized even more. I also measured a 1.49 mpg increase in city driving.

what happens to that AEM filter when its splashed with water and mud? the fact its not coverd up at all is turning me away.. seems ill have the same issues as my old AirAid

I have the Airraid Intake and it did little in performance gains after my exhaust.

I think after a freer flowing exhaust there is little gains to a CAI.

I've got an AEV snorkel on my wish list. But not before they come out with a HEMI capable fix.

I have the MBRP exaust system on order... so I have that end covered.. I am leaning more towards the S&B CAI because of its filter protection,, but it seems i can only order it from the US.. its way to much that way with all the additional taxes.. if someone sold it here in vancouver for a decent price id just get it

I modified my Airaid, added a piece to the front splash guard , added pipe insulation to the top edge so that it actually seals from the hood where water tends to get thrown by the serpentine belt. Added a pre-filter aswell. I'm careful in mud and water, filter has never gotten more than a few drops of water on the prefilter after hitting a foot and a half of standing water at 30mph(oops)

I've gotten it wet, but haven't had any issues. I don't live in a very wet part of the country...

Put it this way, it gets better flow than stock, but not as good as completely open. I also have a flowmaster 40 muffler. I had put the stock box back on after I had driven like this for a year and noticed the diff right away and not just in sound. Red switch, that's a secret, muuuuaaahhhhahaaa.

Not really, it's an led truck bed light with a magnet on it. It fit perfectly there and is handy as an underhood light. I just move it when I need it and stick it whereever
