Has been answer just about 37 times but.... A drop filter will do it great for 70bucks.

If you got the cash and want a little more noise and +1mpg then get a cold air

I understand that this was figuratively speaking, but a +1mpg increase is overstated. Certainly their is some efficiency gained, but likely in the low tenths and only nominally better than a drop in filter. I often switch back and forth between the stock air box with a performance drop in and an Airaid CAI and I can't say that I ever had efficiency numbers that were outside the normal deviation of my paper and pencil fuel mileage. I don't regret buying my CAI and I'm sure it will eventually pay for itself, just a drop in performance filter pays for itself a lot quicker.

Do you mean drop in filter? K&N, Afe, and Rugged Ridge all offer a drop in performance filter for the JK

I ran a drop in and then converted to a CAI. They both did boost my mpg by around 1 on the highway. The drop in didn't offer as much throttle response as the CAI.

If I were to do it all over again, I would get an enclosed CAI or buy a drop in and cut a bigger hole in the stock intake.

What exactly do you mean by "cut a bigger hole in the stock intake?" Thanks!

I did it to my Cherokee, but I am sure some people did it to their JKs.

Basically, you put some holes in the bottom half of the intake to allow more air to be taken in, instead of it being restricted to the factory hole which is pretty small in my opinion.

What I did with my Cherokee... I took the air box out and took a 1/2" hole saw attachment with a drill and drilled holes in the bottom half to allow more air to be taken in. When I re-installed the airbox, it looked stock. However... there is an increased risk of water ingestion of course, but not as much as a CAI.
