Default Confused!

Hi,

I have a 2dr '08 Wrangler X, I'd like to re-gear it, put lockers in it, lift it, and put bigger tires on it.

After reading around on the forums, I think my model has a d30 front and d44 in the rear, however i'm not certain what type of gear ratio's it currently has, also if I wanted to regear it to have a bit more beef for off-roading, what kind of gears are recommended? What are splines?

I was on Northridges website, and they sell all the stuff, but what's the difference between the overhaul kits and the install kits? I'm not a mechanic but sort of want to do this myself to learn more about how my jeep works..

can anyone point me in the right direction?

(also, I'm up in Canada so our winters are pretty long and snowy, which sort of locker would work best in this sort of climate? ARB, Detroit or E-lockers?)

I should've bought a rubicon :P

i'm not sure what the spline count is but i think they are 30 count
i like the arb lockers that is what i would go with
the install kit comes with the shims and such where the overhaul kit will come with new bearing and with everything else that comes with the install kit.

if you didnt get the towing package or the 3.73 gear upgrade you will have 3.21 gears

Welcome.

The gear ratio will depend on what size tire you want to run. Do the gears and lockers at the same time, and even though I can rebuild an engine, I still had a shop do my gears. To critical for me, and it will require specialized tools. Can be done at home...but seemed tedious to me.

Splines are the grooves at the end of the axle shafts. Easier to see a pic of them to understand them better. (Google)

I have the 2 door and went to 37's so I put in 5.13 gears. Perfect match up. Stock I had 3.73's since I had the "S" package. It should have been on your window sticker.

Enjoy it.

Well, I don't know if I got the tow package, I asked for it, however it took about '1 hour' for the dealer to install, I think what they did was install the trailer hitch receiver just under the bumper on a stock X with 3.21's .. Is there anyway to find out what sort of gears I have in it? I have the VIN handy, any lookup service available that would give me the specs?

you can also jack up the rearend and mark the driveshaft and turn the tire one full rotation and count how many turns your driveshaft makes. this should give you your ratio. if it turns just over 3 times =3.21 if it turns almost 4 turns =3.73
