Default Confused about spacers/adapters

I'm new to JK's. I've been a XJ & TJ owner since 1997 but just bought a JK last week.

I have a set of month-old 15x8 Pro Comp 97's (3.75" BS) that I really like & want to move from my TJ to my JK. I've done a LOT of reading but still keep coming back to the same questions. I'd like to get some help.

I know I need adapters to go from 5x4.5 to 5x5 bolt pattern. From what I've read, I may or may not need spacers. The adapters I've seen are all 1.5" adapters so they are also 1.5" spacers.

So... Question 1 is: How could someone say that they can use 15" wheels with no spacers if all adapters are also at least 1.5" spacers?

Question 2: If I use my Pro Comp 97's and 33x12.5x15 DuraTracs, will I need to recalibrate the speedo or make any other mods to keep everything reading right? If so... recommendations?

Thanks!

Yes your speedo will be off. Bigger the tire the more error. I have 33s and I noticed right away. You can get the jeep procal to fix speedo error

They make all different size spacers. I had 3 inch spacers on my stock 29 inch jk tires. Then I bought some used rims that had a 5.5 lug pattern so I had to buy adapters that were 1.5 inch 5.5 to 5.0 adapters. The tires i have are 33x12.50x15 stuck out wicked bad. I got rid of those rims and bought brand new 15 inch rims with right lug pattern and a 4.00inch back space. Cleaner look and dont stick out as far maybe 2.5 inches from fenders.

1. They buy the correct 15" wheels with a 5x5 pattern, so they don't need adapters?
2. If you don't want your speedo/odo to be correct, then don't worry about recalibrating for the taller tires.

This plus I would add that if you add spacers/adapters to your wheels that already have a 3.75" backspace you will end up with a 2.25" back spaced wheel....this will push your tires out pretty far!

Thanks, everyone, I think I have decided to just buy new alloy 15" rims and be done.

If I'm not mistaken, TJ's have a 5 on 5.5 and JK's have a 5 on 5 so I'm not sure if they'd fit.
I have 15" rums with no spacers. on a JK if you have 4.25"-4.5" back spacing you'll be able to have 12.5" wide tires
Speedometer will be slightly off. when i went to 35's its about 5 off in the 30 range.

4.5 or 5.5 doesn't matter - won't fit a JK without adapters.

15" rims have issues with clearing the brakes, so he wants a backspace of 4" or less (depending on the specific rim). 3.75" or less would be better.

To avoid all chances of confusion and problems I purchased 15" Level 8 Trackers (alloy) to go with my new 33x12.5x15 Duratracs.

Got them from DTD based in his informative thread here and a good price.

They are supposed to fit without spacers without problem.
