This is a great idea and I'm headed to Home Depot as soon as the traffic dies down.
I might use rivets to attach the mount to the plate.

Damn. 
I just bought the Cooltech Versamount and it's on the way. I wish I would have stumbled across this sooner. I guess I'll just use the mount that I bought. I'll add this to the list of "live and learn" moments in the life of a Jeep owner.
