Default A couple of ?'s about GEARS.

I am going to put 4.88 in my sahara. I have right now 3.21. I am going to be putting on 37" wheels.
My 1st question is how and were can I get a carrier for the front dana30. I called superior and they gave me a number 706008x and said i can go to napa or autozone, well I did and both of the stores looked at me like I had 3 heads. The guy that is gonna do the install said for me to call this place called DTS. I haven't yet. Also the mechanic said I should look into getting a posi for the back. Honestly I am probably not gonna do as much offroading as most of these people on this site, but I will be doing some. Should I fork over the extra money that I wasn't planning on spending or just leave them open?

Well, if I had to pay to have the diffs open for re-gearing, I'd do the traction aides too while I'm in there anyway....saves paying the labor double, etc.

A buddy blew a front diff 2 yrs ago.....agonized over getting a locker installed while the shop had it all open anyway.....worked out the essentially, it was only extra the cost of the locker itself...the diff part was covered by the gear swap labor already.

You're having both diffs opened up.....really, if you can swing it, look at an Aussie for the front at least, and maybe what ever you can for the rear.

You will NOT have another chance to do this cheaper.

its been said, but... if ur already gonna open them up, might as well add a locker in the front. i'd leave the rear LS. and aussie locker is cheap compared to what ur already spending. about $240.00 for the front. and since it replaces the spider gears, it should cost next to nothing for labor charges.

whatever you decide, post pics when ur done

Check the for sale forum. I sold my D30 carrier with 4.10 gears out of mine and have seen others for sale there too. It should work with the 4.88 gears. Good luck.

Default Speaking from experience

The stock carriers will work with all factory optional gear ratios. That means 3.21, 3.73 and 4.10. The 3.73 and 4.10 gears that are installed at the factory have thicker ring gears to allow for a single carrier. Trust me on this. I bought new carriers for my Dana 30 and Dana 44 from a guy on eBay. Look for seller porc548. I have since sold them at a loss. I should have listened to others on this forum but didn't.

After much reading, it appears that the gear companies are helping out by making their JK gears sets with thick ring gears to help us all out

Open or lockers? That is up to you, your budget and the amount of mud or sand that you will be driving in. I am still using open differentials and that is just fine with me. I have friends that have lockers and won't use them on ice or snow.

Just my 2 cents.

I would strongly suggest 5.13's if your running 37's.

I went from 3:21's to 4:88's and you do not need a new carrier...

As for the locker...I am running open still...I couldn't afford another $1000 for the selectable lockers I want...if you have the money it will save you about $500 in labor to have the lockers installed now...

I am with Pignajeep...if you are going to 37"'s then get the 5:13's...

So you did not have any problems installing 4.88
Do you have Dana 30 front and Dana 44 Rear

Can you please confirm bec i have been waiting to upgrade to 4.88 for a long time but not sure if they fit or do i need anything else which might not be available in the market. My friend bought 5.88 for his sahara shipped around 300 bucks and still no luck

Yes I have an X...I have a Dana 30 in the front and a Dana 44 in the rear. The shop that did the install did take longer to complete than normal, because I was the guinea pig. You don't need a new carrier...there are a few threads about this. I've got about 10K on my 4:88's and they are great!
