Default Custom air intake

Hi, my question is this: has anyone modified the stock airbox to accept a K&N cone filter? I made a DIY intake already, but went back to stock with my snorkel, and miss the intake roar. I tried to make my old DIY intake work, but it wasn't happening without alot of work. If anyone has a stocker they want to donate, PM me, I am too afraid to start cutting on mine. Thanks.

Edit: I found someone who wanted to donate one...for $35 lol. I will be doing a small write-up, as soon as the filter shows up. I did buy a drop-in K&N, and heard very little sound from it. Maybe without the snorkel? My K&N cone from the earlier DIY CAI is too long, so I ended up ordering a different one.

Okay, so here is what I have so far. I modified the factory top lid to accept a K&N cone filter. The ID of the tube that connects it to the inlet tube is shy of 3", and even with my heat gun, I could not force a 3" aluminum tube into it. Sooo, I cut the tube into two pieces. The factory inlet tube didn't have to be modified, but I think the bellows hinder air flow and velocity, so why not. I would have replaced the whole thing, but this was much easier, since there are two complex bends in the factory piece. Actually, what remains of the factory inlet tube is pretty smooth on the inside, and will allow for some movement. I used fiberglass resin to attach the tube inside the box, and installed the 1/4" lexan so I can easily keep tabs on filter cleanliness. If I ever come across a tube (aluminum, PVC, etc.) that is around 2.9" in dia., I will probably redo this, for obvious reasons, and lose the extra band clamps and silicone coupler. The filter I have ordered is K&N part# RU-3580 ($35+shipping from Summit), and it has a 3" flange ID, 6" dia. base, 4" dia. top, and is 5" long. It will fit!!! Hopefully, this gives me the sound I want. It should be here Tuesday.

Don't tempt me. I remember reading that BMW did something similar with their Z3, when it came out.

river raider has an expedition style snorkel much like the military hummers do...I bought one from them and installed it...I have not seen a setup like this anywhere around NJ, everyone has the AEV setup, or the Volant air setup....with the river raider setup, I take the extension tube,(which brings it up above the roofline) off when not offroading, and just just use the 3" plus the cap...works great,,,check it out....

Got the filter, put it on, went for a test drive...don't waste your time. It isn't any louder than a stock paper filter, or K&N drop-in. It may flow a little better, but the stock system flows enough. I did find another thread where a member made his own box to couple the AEV snorkel to, and it has a removable lid. He did say it sounded like a CAI with the lid off, so maybe this would be a better route to go. I don't think I will pursue this any more, especially since I am getting ready to modify the exhaust, so it's not like I'll be able to hear the intake anyways. Just wanted to share my findings.
