Default D-ring ideas

Do you guys think I can mount a set of D-rings while keeping my stock bumpers? I'm wondering if I can mount them to the steel underframe and cut the plastic bumper to have them exposed. What ya's think?
PS: save your breath on the "Just get steel bumpers" remarks. Eventually I will

I'm sure you could. You would want to anchor it somehow like where the recovery hooks are. if you just bolt them to th esteel bumper you will be getting that bumper you don't want to hear about

The rear would be relatively easy, but what about the crush cans up front? The point you would need to attach to is behind the cans. Most after-market bumpers get rid of the cans anyway, so maybe that's an option.

I think I coughed up my stuffed shells reading that... too damn funny I could picture that happening. Is there much space between the plastic and the steel on the front bumper because of the crush cans? Maybe I cuold make a bracket to mount the D-ring onto.

get in touch with me... I'd like to get involved with some modifications like that. I have a friend who owns a fabrication shop and I'm sure he could help suggest something.

It would be tough to do in the front. The Pure Jeep d-ring mounts have the same bolt pattern as the front bumper mounting holes. Your problem as stated above will be the crush cans. The mounting points for the d-rings are probably like 6" or so BEHIND the plastic front bumper. This would put the d-rings in a deep hole in the bumper. What I would do if I were you would be to just remove the crappy plastic bumper cover, and leave the bumper frame on and use it for your bumper. Of course you'd need to cut the crush cans off to still mount the d-rings. Since they bolt to the frame ends, they would still be good recovery points.

I cut the plastic off my bumper and the crush cans came off very easily with a grinder. Just make sure you do a good job welding that on, the metal underneath the plastic shell is generally only 1/8" in most places.

He doesn't have to weld at all. The mounting points for the bumper are extremely stout, as they are the frame ends. The Pure Jeep d-rings are designed to bolt right to the frame end brackets with no modification other than perhaps knocking out the factory bumper mounting bolts. Those mounting points on the frame ends are WAY more than 1/8" thick. The bumper frame however, is another story.

All very good points, guys. Dave, I'm thinking there has got to be a way to shape a sturdy extension bracket that can move the D-ring close enough forward. I also haven't looked closely enough at pics of front bumper removed.
