Diff cover, paint prep question
Ok, I have read many threads, but I can't quite figure this out. I have new PSC diff covers and am ready to prime and paint. I have etching primer, etc. Here's the thing, I cleaned the covers with mineral spirits and rinsed. Immediately after rinsing, surface rust formed. I used a rust stripper and tried rinsing with boiling water (theory is it evaporates immediately, thereby limiting rust). Again, immediate surface rust.
Can I just spray primer on that surface? Or what should I do?
Thanks!

I always us vinegar to remove any oil from the metal. Then dry with a towel and prime shortly after. If you did get some rust you could always use the primer that is meant to be used over rust. I did my PSC cover last year and it still looks great. Once you remove the oil with the vinegar bare metal will rust right away, especial if water is evolved. Even your finger prints will cause rust. Here is a picture of mine. I do wish I had reversed the colors.
Yeah I spray them with brake clean right before I hit them with primer. And kinda wipe them off with a rag to get that surface rust off. I primed and then used some rustoelum epoxy and a automotive rim clear coat from so company works real well.
