Default Different Gears?

I have done a lot to my jeep.

In the past I have read of people changing gears after they put larger tires on their JK. I have added 33's and my milage and performance really hasn't changed drastically. Does changing gears make the Jeep perform better? Or is it more to save the added stress on the transmission??

I appreciate the advice, as always.

You change gears when you change tire size so that the power to your wheels maintains the same ratios as stock. By increasing your tires and not increasing the gear ratio you essentially decrease power.

Upgrading your tires to 33s isn't very different from stock and hence why you didn't notice a major difference. Move up to a 35 and you'll notice it.

the reason you don't have much trouble is that you have an 07 and probably have 4.10s. It is an auto right? I had 33.3" tires with 4.10s and it sucked a little, mpg was lower and it never knew if it wanted overdrive or not. Up hills it always kicked out. I put on some 35s, and that was it. I couldn't take it anymore. I swapped in some 5.13s. I would never have geared for 33s, but the gear tire ratio between 5.13s and 35s is way better than 4.10s and 33s. If you go any bigger or have 3.73s I would regear. I wouldn't go any number lower than 4.88 as you will get tired of 33s and go bigger one day I bet!

LOL I hope don't get tired of my 33's.

I do take my jeep on the highway, and I do think the handling would get worse if I went bigger.

I would like to get back to the factory RPMs.

Handling would just be different because your higher up there but that is what would take time to get used to. I had 32s on my YJ and then I put 35s on it and yeah it was different and I had to take a bit more precaution on my turns and all that but once I got used to it, then it was like I was driving on my 32s.

Exactly, unless you really need to spend $1,000, if so, send it to me and I will send you an adjusted RPM gauge that looks like your rpms are at stock.

If you have 4.10's I wouldn't spend the money right now. I went to 33's (295's) but had 3.21's with the manual trans. I upgraded to 4.56 gears and am happy with the results.

Redneck,

Nice to hear from another M37 fan.

Check out this pic. I have an M101 trailer I converted to a camper. It has four foldable bunks and a powerless vented LP heater!!! I have two sons, 8 and 10 that really get into it.
