Default Difficult steering when flexed or tilted

Scenario....

ok so I have had the steering be very difficult for me before. The latest instance was a simple articulation flex in my buddies from yard on a rock to check some bump stop measurements. Backed down off the rock and sitting flat in the driveway. Super difficult to turn the wheel at all. Eventually after rolling forward and giving a little gas it goes free and is fine again.

Interested to see what others think this may be.

at idle it is a little touch always but the second you give it gas it is fine.

this is different though. Like completely solid and can’t steer at all like it is bound up but everything looks fine.

can be troublesome off road when in a spot and you need to turn the wheels a bit to maneuver

Not many details in your profile. You don't have lockers that are turned on while trying to do that right?

Default I have had this issue off road with lockers engaged

I have had the issue Offroad with lockers engaged.

this time I was in 4 lo with lockers engaged to get on rock. Then disengaged back on pavement. All straight driving. Then went to turn the wheel and super hard to do.

what you thinking? I am new to this so Any thoughts are appreciated

What makes the most sense to me is that the locker isn't disengaging as quickly as it should, cuz what you describe sounds like trying to turn while locked and not really moving. Can't say for certain that is it, but that is what the symptom sounds like to me.

Interesting.

I mean seems like I am trying to move a telephone pole just won’t turn at all.

so this would be normal?

I guess I don’t understand how the pumpkin being locked would affect the steering knuckles from moving side to side.

When the carrier is locked, the axle shafts cannot move independently of each other, so the axle shaft u-joints on each side are binding a bit and there is a lot of pressure on the steering system and box. Once you start rolling a bit the steering loosens up as the u-joints get in motion, but at a dead stop steering is difficult. For people that do a lot of technical wheeling, this is where hydro steering and RCV shafts with CV joints start to become attractive options. You can do a little test just so you can see the difference......turn the locker on and roll forward a bit to make sure it's engaged. Try turning the wheel back and forth at a dead stop......then start to roll forward a bit and observe how the steering loosens up.

I wouldn't say you have to run out and buy RCVs, it's more just being aware of the situation. Very similar to knowing when you're in 4WD that making a sharp 90° turn is going to start a bit of binding.

I'd go so far as to say hydro steering would be a better upgrade before RCVs IMO.

I digress.....that air locker should not be taking so long to unlock. That is not normal if that is indeed what is going on. Google around a bit on "air locker not disengaging". All my locker experience is electronic, so no messing around with air hoses and solenoids.
