Dip my rims today did a write up
Ok all did the plasti dip rim on my jk today and I love it so far. Ill post up my info here tutorial and follow up in a week or so to show wear and hold up after a wash. Start here: Tools you'll need:
Spray gun attachment: Home Depot trust me this is soo much better the spraying with your finger and it's only 3$
4 cans of Plasti dip your choice of color fun fact: I've done research and plasti dip sells for the lowest price at Home Depot for 5.96 currently
Bottle of alcohol and a spay attachment, Wally World had the spray attachment picture and it works on all normal size bottles for a dollar Small bucket Dawn soap small bottle 2 Old rag/towel or microfiber to get fancy Rinse bucket or hose Garbage bag any brand 13 gallon size 5 of them Iphone or any phone with a time or hell just a watch Ok bucket, water, a squirt of dawn in the bucket. Then I washed up the wheels real good and rinsed them.. make sure to push the towel into the grooves and rinse well. Wipe dry and let air dry for 5-10 min.
Grab the alcohol and unscrew the cap from it. Put the spray knozzle on it and screw it on. Spray your wheels and soak them well with alcohol and wipe them down with a dry rag. Let dry for 5 min. During that time grab the garbage bag and slice it open to look like this. If you just pull at the seam it will part like this.
Then stuff behind the wheel and spread round and back to the claiper and rotor make sure to cover all your rotor and caliper so double check
Should look like this at the end. Ok ready to paint. Grab a can of plasti dip and shake it well. Attach the spray handle and start your first coat, starting on the inside of the spokes and triangle cut outs then work your way out to the rest of the rim. Always end each coat with a spray round the lip of the rim where it meets the tire A MUST. First coat is light and should look like this
WAIT TIME BETWEEN COATS is 10min so set your timer on your phone for each coat Coat 2
Coat 3
Coat 4
Lastly coat 5
Again make sure you end with spray the lip around where tire meets on each coat. Heck ya!all done with paint now set your timer for 20 min Come back and drive the car back to rotate the tires just a bit so you can see if you missed any from that angle. Now rub you finger on the TIRE (not the wheel) and it will ball up some of the plasti dip and pull it ... it will ring around the rim and you will end up with a clean tire with no overspray. Time to pull out the bags. Just reach behind the tire and pull it BACK and out. CONGRATS ALL DONE
No car wash or wheelin or touching them for atleast 3-4 days for curing. Hope this helps someone. I will update soon with wash up and wear details. INFACT I WENT THROUGH TWICE SINCE I TOOK A LITTLE EXTRA TIME CURING THE WHEELS. AND GOOD TO KNOW AND SHOW, ALLS GOOD THEY KEPT UP AND EXCELLENT PERFECT CONDITION STILL. UPDATE 3/28 ALL STILL HOLDING BEEN THROUGH SEVERAL CARWASHES AND RAIN AND MUD STILL LOOKS PERFECT
UPDATE 01/26/16
ok all looks like there finally needing a redo. There finally peeling from the edge of the rim bad enough to require a redo. Overall very happy I did this gotten lots of compliments and kept the stock look for a easy price. 3 years is well worth it.

I might try this when it warms up, been wanting new wheels for the JK for over a year but can't justify the cost for no real functional gain. Plasti dip seems like a good alternative, thanks for the write up!
not bad at all.
when i did mine i removed them all and did them one by one laying flat; less of a chance of drips and its easy to hit all the angles.
may i suggest when you have your tires rotated and balance to have the shop place the wheel weights on the inside with the sticky tape; youll have to re-dip them but the outcome will be worth the cost of more dip.

There's a good chance that the first time the wheels are removed you will get peeling around the lugs from the dip twisting when the lugs are loosened. You might want to try cutting the dip around the lugs before you remove any lugs (if you can get a small razor blade in there).

Although I'm not to fond of the plasidip stuff.. the write was very well done.. except you must have copied and pasted from one site to the forums.. because the images and alignment is allover the place and hard to follow.
Mind you.. I did a write up myself on painting my stock rims to have red highlights in the spoke area.. was going very well until I swapped rims and tires with another jeep wrangler owner.

Already on it actually doing vintage gold lug nuts (that bronzeyish gold color) ones as my color theme is going to be black with touches of vintage gold not overkill like the 2014 d editions Sent from my iPhone using JK-Forum
