Default Disassembling the Soft Top

so, in a recent demonstration of my short Italian temper, with my rear window zipper being stuck, i grabbed the zipper pull and..... pulled. hard. so hard that i tore the bottom of the zipper right off.

i tried the warranty route with my dealership and it was rejected. i found an auto upholstery place that will sew in a new zipper, but he wants the top for about a week (no prob as i take it off for the summer and put my safari top on) but he wants it without all the framework.

so...... has anyone taken apart their soft top or put together a soft top? how hard is it to do? any input would be appreciated.......

When I got my soft top from the dealer, it was completely disassembled so I had to put it together myself. It was a real pain in the butt trying to figure out how everything went together, but that's because I had no idea how it all went together. Taking it apart and putting it back together would be much easier.

If all you have to do is take apart the cloth, then that should be pretty easy - just lots of little screws that you have to undue. I would unscrew all screws with the top still on, leaving just the front screws on. Take the top off with the frame work, then undue all the screws in the main front header part (there's something like 28 screws on the front). You get to those screws buy flipping up the cloth over the front mounting piece - once you have it off you'll see it. Unscrew all those and you're good to go.

Hope this helps..

Paramaniac--sorry to hear about your problem. A suggestion: Undoubtedly this will come up again. How about taking pictures of the entire process (disassembly and reassembly) and putting a write-up on the forum? Someday someone else is going to need these instructions, and they will thank you many times over for your extra work.

Mark, the thought hadn't crossed my mind about taking pics until Pagoda PMd me and suggested it, and as for the write up, even better idea!

Sadly this isn't the first thing I broke with my temper, hopefully ill get the hint and relax a little!

To everyone else, those zippers aren't all that strong, be careful if it gets stuck.

I won't be taking it off until I return from my vacation, prob the 20th of June... Then its TOPLESS for the summer!!!!
