Default Do I need longer bump stops?

Hello, I have a 2008 JK X with a 1.5 in leveling kit with Falcon 2.1 shock for a 1.5-2.5in lift. I measured from bump stop to axle and it seems to be almost exactly the same distance until my shock would bottom out. Because the bump stops are rubber I assume that if I come down hard the rubber will compress and the shock will bottom out. Has anyone with the same set up experienced this? And if I need new bump stops any recommendations on size and brand?

Thanks,
Michael

What ever the distance, you want the bump stop to compress and stop the travel before the shock bottoms out, longer travel shocks would be best for movement, but taller bump stops would be better than the shocks extending all the way and bottoming out

IF you're calling the yellow bounce bumpers bump stops-they are not. They will collapse to the cup with little to no resistance. I ended up with 2" of bump stops from Metal Cloak but would guess you need something.

Just measure the exact distance on each and you'll know. Given that those are expensive shocks, I'd say yes- err on the side of caution and give them protection. If you have inadequate bumpstop, you can tear an axle mount off. I can go into detail but save yourself the work and protect the shocks from pushing where they shouldn't be.

So if I measure from the bottom of the bump stop to where it contact the axle and the distance is the same as my shocks down travel than that is no good because the rubber will compress and my shock will not. So how much longer should the bump stop be?

My personal opinion is you'd want at least 1/2" of a heavy duty bumpstop like a hockey puck or other substitute (Metalcloak, etc). The squishy bumpstops soften the blow but you (all of us really) should be doing what we can to protect the shocks.

That being said, I don't care for generic recommendations of 2" for a 2" lift, then you've gained nothing in the way of travel.

^^^ this right here. For example. I have 3 1/8 inches of measured lift. I'm running 2 inches of additional bump stop and have no issues. The bump stops are what hits before any tire or hard parts. Best to actually go through the trouble of checking it.

A long time ago, I posted the sequence to do this... I'll see if I can dig up that post.

EDIT - here it is.

Awesome information! Thank you. I am a little rushed because I am going on a trip soon so need to order the parts before I can take measurements. Would adjustment bump stop extension work from Rock Krawler or Metal Cloak? And any recommendations on brand or are they pretty comparable?

Find one that you can adjust without taking the coil out, but as far as function- yes, they're all the same. I put a nutsert into the bucket so I can add/ change bumps with minimal tools and hardware.

Last question, just for my information. I have 3.5in (at ride hight) Of up travel before my shocks bottom out. Is that acceptable? I purchased the shortest falcon shocks (1.5-2.5" lift).
