for the 2012 models you do in fact have to replace the driveshaft, I've heard and been told you only need to replace the front driveshaft. In reference to having to regear it, it depends on what gear ratio you already have and what your going to do with it, on a tv show I watched a few days ago they showed putting an 07 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a 4' lift, on 35's the host of the show said that 35's were the biggest you could go without having to regear it. But yet again he didn't state what the gear ratio already was, so I personally think it depends what ratio came with the Jeep, and what you plan to do with it. The drive shaft I've heard alot about is this product right here, but as I continue to look I don't see anything for a 2012 model.

Hope it helps.

being that you have a 2012, you will either need to relocated or address your exhaust cross over or, install a new front drive shaft. if you don't, you will damage your drive shaft as the slip shaft boot tears into the cross over. i should add that at 3.5" of lift, even if you just address your exhaust cross over, the angle that your front drive shaft will sit at will be quite steep and will cause your cv joint at t-case to fail prematurely. being that you have a 2-door, the angle your rear drive shaft is now sitting at will be significant enough that it will cause your cv boot and eventually joints to fail prematurely. because of this, you will need to replace it as well and, if you don't have it already, you'll need adjustable rear upper control arms to set your pinion angle as well.

With him having a 2dr his rear should be replaced because of the steep angle that will be created by that much lift

yes. he will also need to get adjustable rear upper control arms in order to set the pinion angle with it.

depending on how big of a tire you plan on running, i recommend a coast or je reel 1310 shaft as they are made well and use spicer and neapco u-joints for the same price as other popular brands and without having to get them as an upgrade. if you plan on running 37's or bigger, a set of 1350's would be the better way to go. if you can't afford all that now, just get the front shaft and wait till your rear starts to fail. when you replace it, you will need adjustable rear upper control arms.
