Default Do you need a gasket seal for diff covers?

Did a search but did not find any specific answer to this. While changing diff fluid do you need a gasket seal for putting the diff covers back on? WOL write up did not mention but wanted to make certain.....TYIA

Yes, RTV or LubeLocker.

Yup, them lubelockers are the way to go. Over time, regular compressed papre gaskets WILL leak. It ain't a if....it's a WHEN. They slowly become saturated to the point that their seal is compromised and they fail. The lubelockers....although not specifically designed to, CAN be used over again if you're careful and don't tear them.

I've always used RTV on my diff covers and trans pans and have never had a leak. I know a lot of people insist on going to a gasket, but I'm not sure why.

Now if you're just changing the fluid, do you even need to remove the covers?

on the JK's... no. on older model diffs you had to. since i have started wheeling my jk, if i open the drain and it looks like i got some water in there, ill open the covers and give the gears a look see, spray a little brake cleaner on them. that is where a lubelocker really comes in handy.

not to mention, when i changed my covers.... i spent more time torqueing the bolts than i did waiting for RTV to setup
