Default Drive Shaft Problems

So I had a 3" Teraflex standard lift installed on my '07 JK last October. I was told that if I stayed under 4"s of lift that I would be able to run my stock drive shafts. Well I just noticed a knocking noise when my jeep runs cold for just about a 1/2 mile and then quiets down. After inspection I found that my rear CV joint is starting to spit grease out and is wearing out quickly. I have done very mild off roading since my lift was installed. Is this normal? Any suggestions on what I should do/install? This is my first jeep and I have trusted my "Local Off Road" to direct me in the right direction, but this isn't the first thing they told me wrong on.

whoever told you that you would be fine if you stayed under 4" of lift is a moron who doesn't know what the hell he was talking about and you shouldn't take anymore advice from them. what you are seeing is totally normal if you have an automatic and have more than 2.5" of lift with new longer shocks.

for now, you should be just fine running around like you are. at worst, you may eventually hear some squeaking as the grease in the spline shaft dries out but that's about it. in the future, you will want to get a new aftermarket u-joint style driveshaft as it will be narrower in diameter and not cause this problem.

Unfortunately they told you wrong. it's around 3" and up to get new driveshafts. I have a 3" TeraFlex kit as well and ran my stock shafts for a week before my aftermarkets (Coast 1310's) came in. At less than 100miles of on-road driving they where beginning to spit grease.

Your going to have to get new shafts.

Yeah, He was a moron. He even told me I could run stock rims with my 33s. I've got the manual transmission, but it sounds like you guys have validated my thoughts. Only good thing about that guy being a moron is that they have given me a few discounts on other parts since discovering they hired an idiot. Happy do you like your coast shafts? I've been looking at tom woods. Also do guys know of a write up for do it your self, or is it pretty difficult to install?

i'm running a coast on my orange JK now and the quality of it is great. install isn't too difficult so long as you have the right tools. i've started a write-up on this and will try to get it done this week.

I like them just fine. I did happen to have the tools i needed except for one big-arsed socket (forget which size) so i picked that up and the install was pretty simple. took longer to get the stockers unbolted and off than it did to install the new ones (i have a 2dr auto, so i did both)

You can run 33's on the stock rims BTW. I am pretty sure they arent listed on the mfg website that way but I have around 17k on my 33's on my stock 17" sahara rims. Offroaded & aired down to 15psi no problems at all.
