ronjenx - yeah, I can get the same in manuals too, but with the Jeep in 2WD there no active drive components up front.
Yeah, but I am assuming it only seems to come from up front.

Ah, yeah - could just sound like it's coming from the front.

I've got 11,000 miles on the gears, but they were put into a new housing about 2000 miles ago. The clunking is definitely more pronounced in lower gears. I'm probably just being paranoid.

Thanks guys for your input. This forum and the people on it are great. Cheers!

My front end click was from the rubber bushing at the upper control arms where
connected to the front axle. Replacing with factory new ones.

Drop your diff cover, lift your rear end off the ground and set it on jack stands. Watch your spider gears for movement in the shaft that ties them into your carrier while slightly moving your tire back and forth. I've dealt with the old trashed spider gear problem. I started with the same symptom and found it with the steps outlined above.

Checked the bushings; I've had that trouble before, too. I might crack the case this weekend just to ease my mind. Wayoflife checked out the amount of play in the driveshaft last night and says it's in the normal range.

Thanks again, all.
