Dynatrac dynaloc hubs and differential problem
Hi,
I have a Jeep JKU with prorock60's. They are 2.5 years old and have 47527kms/29531mi on them. The front has Dynaloc hubs. Both hubs were having trouble engaging and it sounded like the inner lock and outer lock were just rubbing against each other which would make a tapping/clicking sound. I disassembled both hubs, cleaned, inspected all parts and they all looked good(no wear) ,regreased lightly and reassembled everything.
The passenger side then locked 20 out of 20 times. The driver side locked 16 out of 20 times. When the driver side wouldnt lock i would spin the tire a quarter turn in reverse and then forward and the hub would then be locked. It would also lock when i removed the hub cap(the design fails locked via a wavespring).
While the driver side hub was apart, I noted that when pressing in on the inner lock and releasing it would sometimes stick which leads me to believe its a wavespring issue since the wavespring is what presses the outer lock into the inner lock locking the axle.
I then swapped hub internals from the driver side to the pass side and the problem followed to the pass side. I then swapped piece by piece, reassembling and testing the hub lock each time. The hub finally locked when i got to the inner lock with brass collar(collar angled lip facing inner lock teeth as per dynatrac instructions). This didnt really make much sense since the parts from both hubs look identical and have no wear.
On to the next problem. While testing all the above with the front end on jackstands i noticed when spinning the driver side tire that the front driveshaft would not move even though the hub was locked and axle was spinning. I used a pry bar and wiggled the stub shaft out and in a few times. It appeared to have moved about an 1/8-1/4" out and back in the axle tube. After doing this I spin the tire again and the driveshaft starts moving. I then spin the pass side with hub locked and the axle shaft spins and front driveshaft spins but both tires don't spin in opposite directions which they should do with an open diff. It has an ARB locker which when engaged doesnt spin the tire in the same direction at the same time.
Has anyone experienced any of these issues or have any ideas of what to look at?
Thanks

Just got off the phone with Dynatrac. They agree with my wavespring diagnosis and are sending me a couple new wavesprings.
They did say that with a normal open diff when you spin one tire the other will spin in the opposite direction however with the ARB in there the internals are different so i wont necessarily see one tire spin in the opposite direction. Time to start troubleshooting why the locker is not engaging.
