Default Element door question

How feasible would it be to buy JUST the metal element door enclosures, and weld on hinges and a latch? In essence you would have a metal half door for under 200. How thick is that metal?

Doesn't the metal enclosures attach to the tube doors somehow? Clip, screw? I think they are pretty thin. I have seen them but didn't pay much attention to them. Seems like the wood doors would hold up better. lol

The metal is too thin. You need a frame.

The Element Door Skins are about 1/8"-1/4" thick. Solid enough to weld on. Here is a pic of the Skin from Quadratec's website:

Note the Cut-Outs, where the Hinges are located. There are not really Hinges there, as pictured. The Door Skins are assembled on the Tube Doors, which actually have the Hinges. Well, not really Hinges, per sey, but HOOKS, that slide right into the Hinges on our Jeeps. Here's a little better pic of the HOOKS on the Tube Doors:

Since there are only Cut-Outs on the Door Skins, I'm not sure exactly where you'd be able to weld Hinges to it. The Latches are pretty cheap to buy, and would have to be Welded to the Door Skins. Usually, they mount together with the Door Skin and the Tube Door, or to the Tube Doors only, because of the thickness of the assembly together. With just welding the Latches to the Door Skins, you'd probably have an Inside/Outside gap, where the Latch Side of the Doors wouldn't line up with the body properly.

Just my $.02!

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

The Door Skins have two Loops welded to the bottom-inside of them. These two Loops, hook on to the bottom Tube of the Tube Doors, to hold the bottom part together. The Upper part of the Doors are held together with the Mirror Mounts and the Door Latches. So, there are three points of contact between the Door Skins and the Tube Doors. Pretty solid assembly when it's done.

Cheers!
