Question Esp aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!

Hey Jeepers, had a 3" tf lift and 35's put on... the steering is centered... the tires are at 30psi.... And now the ESP is going bonkers around every corner which is driving me nuts... So being the good JK Forum reader that I am, I tried the ESP full off trick which consists of the 4H, the various wheel turning and 7 second holding of the ESP button and no luck what so ever. I can get the chime after the first 1/2 turn, but nothing after that and Im getting tired of fearing every turn. PLEASE HELP!!!!

A) Is the jeep still suppsed to be doing the ESP thing if the wheel is centered and the tires are the right pressure???

B) What the hell am I doing wrong with the ESP permanent disable code???
THanks -T

Most likely your caster is out. I took mine to an alignment shop and fixed the problem. You can get close doing it by yourself but a shop is dead on. As for your other question I couldn't tell you.

I had the same problem...
Long story short, something was left un-tightened when one of the shop guys was messing with my Jeep and though it seemed my steering was centered, it wasn't.
My ESP went berserk- but eventually became disabled so I let it go (sick of dealing with the morons at the dealership)
Anyway, a about a month or so later, I met up with Wayoflife (Eddie) on a run- I asked him to take a peek and he fixed it within minutes. (He's the man)
...For the life of me, I can't remember what was left loose- It was the steering box doohicky thinga majig.

Eddie- where are you when I need you?

hey meganurse, first off, 30psi in your tires is okay for 35's but you might want to bring that down a bit closer to 28psi. i know it's not that much of a difference, but it is what i would have recommended from the get go and it might help. also, would it be safe to assume you have a 2-door? they do tend to be a bit more squirly with a tall lift and TF makes one of the tallest 3" lifts on the market. as mentioned, you should try to add a bit more positive caster and that should help things out as well. if you're steering wheel really is centered, these few things should help out and your computer should start to learn as well. try it out and let us know if it helps.

4hi, transmission in neutral hold esp for 7 seconds or so. Or just install a switch, or instead of installing the switch just cut the damn wire.

I'm having the same problem with my 2 door. We just installed a 3" Full traction lift and Pro Comp Xterrain 33 x 13.50 x 18. I took it for a quick spin around the block and the ESP was trippin' out. I adjusted the steering and haven't taken it out for a test drive yet (it was getting late). Hopefully, the ESP will behave better this morning.

Now that I've made my funny for the thread....here's an honest answer. A lot of people are having problems in this area. Here's what I think is happening. Old hamer up there ain't too far off at all. As caster changes dramatically from factory settings, it has an affect on scrub radius. The scrub radius is distance between the Steering Axis Inclination and the center of the wheel where both would theoretically touch the ground. Although changing caster doesn't change scrub radius, it does change the angle at which the scrub radius contacts the ground. This can cause the computer to think the tires are slipping and prematurely activate the ESP. I believe if you get the caster back in spec, everything will be as one again.

It is funny how the computer plays such a big part in this. Even once I had the geometry issues worked out I had one place that would always cause my esp to kickin if I was in 4th but was fine in 3rd even at the same speed. Now it doesn't kickin anymore there, go figure

Good luck I think everyone has covered the reasons and typical solutions.

To answer Wayalife's question, its a 4 door actually, it's just a really picky 4 door for some reason. And you're right about the teraflex being a tall 3" lift, never had to jump into a jeep before.
As for a more positive caster im honestly completely in the dark as to what this is or how to make one more positive. Is this magical doo hickey shamma lamma ding dong majig that DizzyLiz was talking about, or is that just what you look at to tell if it's a boy jeep? ::kidding:: Do I go to the dealership for a new caster or is it a simple adjustment issue?? And thanks again for all the input everyone! -T
