Exhaust write-up
Anyone have a write up for an inexpensive exhaust system that deletes the huge gas tank stock muffler? Looking for something that is relatively easy to install and not too loud, for a 3.6L 4 door. Thanks!!

Yes it'll fit just fine. No difference in that area of the exhaust.

I have it installed and think it sounds great. Look on YouTube for a video so you can hear the sound difference.

A little loud for my personal preference. Looking for something more subtle, but still has a nice tone
Don't tread on me. I'm in the same boat as you, and havent found anything I like yet. I've been wondering about the aFe axle-back, but havent found any videos of it yet http://www.amazon.com/aFe-49-46219-E.../dp/B007ZDQDO2 It's smaller, high tuck, and keeps the stock resonator which should be better for drone, but again, i've not really found anyone that has it yet. |
Dynomax Evolution Competition. Same muffler as the rock crawler but it dumps before the rear axle

hmmm, I just took the rear muffler off and had a tail pipe bent from the resonator back, its a little loud on take off, but no drone on the highway...but when u step on it, you know it...Just an idea..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGCKgNnzC0Q The evo kit droned worse than the rock crawler kit for me on the highway, it was almost unbearable at 70mph |
What exhaust did you end up with..??
|
You described my Magnaflow system, small muffler, burble sound (not too loud), and a hanger and clamp to install.

One thing I'm seeming to find is that unless the jeeps are identical (2/4 door, gears, auto/stick) then comparing videos is almost useless. The evo kit droned worse than the rock crawler kit for me on the highway, it was almost unbearable at 70mph |

Mines pretty quiet at 60+ too, running the Evo Comp (dumps before the axle), been about a year, tone quieted down a lot. I use to run with OD off, 3.8L, 35s, 4:10s, automatic and the tone was fine. I just regeared to 5:38s last week, and keeping OD on, drones like crazy cruising around 1500 RPMs.

Here it is at WOT. Sounds mean.

Get the one from Jeepswag (Woods). It's an off road relocation design. Sounds great, and much milder than the other big name brands.

just ordered the dynomax/evo kit for my 12 jkur. My buddy installed the kit for his 08 jku a couple days ago and i got to ride in it. I really like the sound of the exhaust a lot. Yea it does have some drone at low rpms but it not that bad. My 02 Z06 with GHL catback had way worse drone to it. That kit caused things to rattle inside my vette while just driving around. I really like the sound of this dynomax kit it is Def deeper tone than stock or the AFE kit i took off my jeep.

Anyone have an experience on having the aftermatket exhaust on Diesels? Does it make any improvements
|
Yes you will get much more power with a diesel exhaust vs. a jeep

Just thought I would add my input here. I have the Dynomax evo competition on my 2012 JKU automatic now, and have about 200 miles on it so far. I did have the Dynomax VT system on it previously for about a year, but was looking for something a bit louder. And boy is it louder. Especially loud at 70 mph down the highway. I have not had to take any long trips at these speeds yet, but i am imagining that if I did, I may want to shoot myself in the head before I make it to my destination. (ok, maybe a little over the top, but you get the idea..) I may have to go back to the VT system. That one was nice in that it absolutely had no drone at all, literally none, but got a nice aggressive sound to it when you accelerate. What I did not like about that system was how it looked on the Jeep. It is a smaller muffler than stock for sure, but you can still see it as it does not tuck up in the back as well as I wish it did. Also, there is a noted change in the sound of shifting, I think related to valve in the exhaust that moves to eliminate the drone. I have an automatic, and at times when I can hear the engine trying to shift, it just acts like it is hesitating or something like the computer is having a hard time trying to decide when it should shift. At first I thought this was something that would go away with time as the ECU learned, but it did not change after a year of having this on.
Now, I also have an AirRaid intake as well, so that will change some things. If you have a stock air intake, it might not be as aggressive sounding. Just something to be aware of. I am now considering trying the AFE high tuck exhaust. Will give the Dynomax Evo Comp a little more break in time to see if it tames down a bit, but if not, I will likely take advantage of their 90 day sound guarantee and return it. I will say that that it a great benefit to trying out Dynomax. I wish other exhaust manufacturers gave this kind of guarantee. |
Try this as an good alternative.

Amazon.com: aFe (49-46219) 2.5" Axel Back Exhaust System for Jeep Wrangler: Automotive edit: it looks very similar to the Rusty's system posted above... I can't speak to the Rusty's system, but I know that the aFe is stainless SS-409. At that price ($160), it almost seems like it would be aluminum, but not sure. I paid $228 for the aFe from AutoAnything And I will be posting a review of the aFe axle back later this week I spent weeks looking for anyone who had any comments on this system on every forums I could find, and came up with nothing. Some of us have to be trail blazers I guess ;) |

Yeah, thought a bout this one at one time, but spoke with AFE who told me that it had about the same sound as the stock exhaust, which I want louder. It will look a lot better though than the stock exhaust can for sure. Let us know how it turns out.
To get rid of all that weight, and have a high tuck muffler. |

I've just ordered a stainless steel twin exhaust backbox for my Diesel JK. Does anyone have any experience on Diesel and will I get better sound?
