explain offset
I just purchased a wrangler unlimited 4 days ago. We love it so far. We are planning on placing 2" coil spring spacers. I also want to purchase new wheels and tires. One thing I am confused about the the offset of the wheels. Does that effect the size of tires that can be put on? To get a wider looking stance what would be a recommended offset and tire combination? My wife will be driving mostly and it will be mostly on the road. We just want it to look like a jeep. I'm just learning this stuff.
DEFINITION:
The offset of a vehicle's wheel is the distance between the centerline of the wheel and the plane of the hub-mounting surface of the wheel. It can thus be either positive or negative, and is typically measured in millimeters. Offset has a significant effect on many elements of a vehicle's suspension, including suspension geometry, clearance between the tire and suspension elements, the scrub radius of the steering system, and visually, the width of the wheel faces relative to the car's bodywork.
Zero Offset - The plane of the hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.
Positive Offset - The plane of the hub mounting surface is shifted from the centerline toward the front or outside of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.
Negative Offset - The plane of the hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheel's centerline.
I personally went with a 3.75 offset for a wide stance and to clear my 15in wheels from my brake calipers.

Thanks for the information. So I take it that a positive offset gives the wider stance? Also I have another question. We have been looking at BRP 94r wheels, but the company said that the offset was too much to put them on a jeep with only a 2 inch lift. They recommended a min of 4" and said 6" lift was better. Can the offset make that big of a difference in not being able to put them on with that size lift?
