Or-Fab Tire Carrier - Weight Issues
So I'm now seeing some JK's on here with the Or-Fab tire carrier which holds two jerry cans, a spar tire up to 37" an a hi-jack lift. Now, that tire carrier bolts to the tailgate hinges and requires drilling to rear driver side, by the tail light where a metal hinge is placed - with all that weight, can that damage the tailgate or the body/frame of the JK?

mine is holding up fine. course i only have a 33" spare. there is a bracket that mount behind the sheetmetal that you access by removing the tail light on the drivers side (latch). it spreads out the weight. also, the side with the hinge is reinforced by a bracket (again behind the tail light) that anchors to the sheetmetal about an inch behind the roll bar base. that sheet metal is like 4 or 5 plies. its a pain in the a$$ to drill thru. it should not give. it holds helps hold the hinge plat in place.

I had one on my TJ, I'm not familiar with the JK setup. it was strong as hell and did not squeak or rattle.
What I didn't like was drilling holes thru the body. Both hinges and the bolts on the passenger side hinge would rust tight needing to be oiled frequently. Other than that it worked very well. One other note, I bought the carrier mostly to carry 2 jerry cans. but in the two years I had the carrier I never once had to use the fuel out of either one. Even running trails like the white rim in Utah. But it did make me feel better knowing I had that extra fuel and it looked good.
