first report on new tires
After my displeasure with the Falken Wildpeaks in the mud, I decided it was time for a more aggresive tread tire. Don't get me wrong. The Falkens drove great on the road. Their wet and mud performance just didn't cut it for the soggy southeast. After much research I narrowed it down to Nitto mud grapplers, Nitto trail grapplers, and the Pit Bull rocker radials, all in 37". The look of the Nitto mud grapplers has always called to me. The trail grapplers are a good compromise. After a lot of research I decided on the rockers. They came in today (there will be a funny post about that soon...). The tires were ordered from Discount Tire Direct. Great price, great service, and quick shipping. None of the tires took more than 12 ounces to balance. Four of them took less than 7. They are mounted on the Level 8 ZX rims and I will be putting on the "pretty rings". Just could not go with beadlocks yet but I like having something covering the lip...
After mounting, airing them down to 36lbs, and torquing the lug nuts on I took them for a drive. They sure do look sexy! Even better, my daughter and I both felt that they drove "smoother" than the falkens. This may be due to a better balancing job but it was noticeable by both of us. I was very surprised that they had so little road noise for such an aggressive tread. They do have some hum but it is nothing that was irritating. NOthing like the mud grapplers I have heard but louder than the trail grapplers. Cornering on the road, accelerating, and braking all were fine. Road was mostly dry. This weekend I will get them out on the muddy trail in the Birmingham wheeling run. I am very happy with the tires and will report back on their off road performance as soon as I can offer some first hand commentary.
On the power issue, I didn't notice it. The Falkens were 315/70r17s. The Rockers are 37/12.5r17 and noticably taller mounted. Tomorrow morning I will measure them and recalibrate the speedo. My jeep is a 2012 rubi with 4.10s. The braking and accelleration were just fine with the Falkens and fine with the Rockers too. The only difference my daughter and I noticed was that flooring it from dead stop was not as "jerky". Power was still there just no quick jump forward with the heavier wheels. There really was no significant difference. Pics and more to follow...
