I decided the third brakelight would look better NOT sticking above the spare tire and would gain me a little better out-the-back-(window(depending on season)). There is plenty of room between the spokes of my 18" sahara rims to see the light (and through other rims, too, I imagine)

I blended the seam with epoxy and sprayed the whole brakelight a textured finish to match the rest:


Here it is installed with my "reinforcing turnbuckles":

When reinstalling, I cut the zip tie on the grommet where the wiring passes through the tailgate and slid the grommet up along the wires to compensate for shortened light.
