Default front diff gear oil question...

I just went to change my front diff gear oil and when i was removing the fill plug, oil was REALLY coming out..I thought that was a bit odd. Didn't know how you could fill it that much and still get the plug back in. Not my question, however. When I was putting the new oil in, I didn't even get the first full quart in and it starting coming out the fill hole. I thought it was supposed to take 1.3 quarts? Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance.

Default I got a little more than 1qt in the front

I just changed my diff oil yesterday. I was able to get a little more than 1qt in the front, and just shy of 3qts in the rear. Hope that helps

Over-filling at the factory is not uncommon, neither is not getting the full amount back in. Also, after lifting, the housing is tilted so the fill hole will be a bit lower. Grab a floor jack and lift that end up, and you can get a bit more in.

I changed out my stock diff covers recently and I measured the fill hole of the stock covers to the new ones. They measured about a quart for the D30 and 2 quarts for the D44. I wound up adding another half quart in each for good measure.

that makes sense, thanks. Wouldn't hurt anything with 1 in front and 2 in the back would it?

The numbers aren't important. The oil needs to be a little above the level of the axle tube, lower surface, so the oil can get to the outer bearings in the rear, and the carrier bearings in the front.
Lifts, and after market diff covers will change the number of quarts. Make a little dip stick if you have to, but ensure the oil is at the proper physical level.

Just changed mine today; both front D30 and Rear D44 on 2010 JKU with 2.5" TF lift -used 2Q's in rear and 1Q in front... Both started to run out of fill plug - good to go!

From what i've read you want the oil level to be at the yellow line shown in pic. for my rear riddler diff cover, i just stuck my pinky finger in there and see if i could touch any oil
