Angry front gear install gone bad

so i took the jeep to the dealer to get some new gears installed(5.13"s)the rear end went together with no problems but the front end apparently needed 40 thou worth of shims to get it to mesh right and when it was put back together and roadtested the locker or 4x4 light was flashing because it was shimmed so far over it was activating the sensor,so now i get a bill to take it all apart and see what the fuck, can anyone shed some light on how this sensor works or if this even makes sense.thank you

is the locker light on all the time? if so, could be they just installed the sensor on wrong (outside of the dog clutch instead of the inside). this is a common problem.

The dealer should pay to fix it right if they screwed up the install.

Does the locker lock? Does it unlock? Put it in 4Low and drive in some circles on blacktop and you'll be able to tell if it locks. The light should be on steady. Then unlock it and drive in the same circles and see if it unlocked. If it unlocked but the light is flashing it is a sensor problem that they should be able to fix easily as WOL said. Anybody that has done a few of these would now how to put one together without having this problem. Yes that is a slam at the dealer.

BTW, what ever gave you the idea that a Jeep dealer was competant to do this job? A dealer would be the LAST place I would ever want to do a regear. And if he did it in house and didn't sub it out to the local driveline shop he is an idiot.

"If I play nice" You mean, if YOU pay for THEIR screw up? That's not right.

If they know what they are doing they can loosen things and do it. There is also a possibility that they have damaged the sensor. The sensor plunger should move freely in and out by hand. If it takes any force it is damaged; and they broke it. It's about a 60 dollar part but since they broke it you should not have to pay for it.

As an aside your diff was probably the first one the dealer ever had apart. You were paying him to learn. And now he wants you to pay to fix his mistake. Amazing!
