Gas savings??
That's the most accurate response I've seen. I never bothered with gas mileage on any of my jeeps (this is number 6). I didn't buy them for long-term daily driving so the mileage isn't much of an issue. I see it as more of a challenge in finding the right combination of components which yield the optimal solution.
My commute is 30 miles one way to work and if I want/need to go to town another 30 in the opposite direction. I've settled knowing I won't get that hybrid or even honda MPG numbers but I would like to get a little more than what I am now (about 15mpg).
I'm thinking about taking the spare off and keeping a tire repair kit in the Jeep. But I'm also wondering if a snorkel really does help that much to justify the cost.

I'm running a Sahara JKU with 4" lift and 315/70R17 tires, auto transmission, and a Superchip programmer. I've just started a little experiment. Here is what I'm doing.
- Run the Superchip in Mileage XS mode
- Disabled OD (Is there a steering wheel dance for permanent OD disable?)
- Permanently disable ESP (using the steering wheel dance)
- Running topless with no A/C.
- Using factory fluids until my free oil changes run out (4 left).
- Light on the skinny pedal (Trying to maintain RPM's under 2500 at all cost)
- Cut off engine at long stop lights or lights where I know the pattern
- No idling in parking lots, drive thru's, etc.
That alone is the reason I want to get full metal doors during the months I wouldn't dare take my top down.

I'm wasn't looking to turn the Jeep into a hybrid or anything (although...), I just wanted tips to improve 3-4 mpg, that over an 18 gallon tank can put an extra 54-72 miles per tank. And in Texas everything is so far away every bit helps.
I hate to jump into this and be a downer but man oh man I cannot stand those people who say things like "Its a Jeep, get used to 0x mpg" or "You are driving a box on wheels". Not that we should expect to get 40mpg or anything even close, but those comments are just not helpful.
We should expect to get somewhere near 17 to 20 mpg with reasonable driving. As for the OP, I have to agree with a lot of other people here. I recently was careful about the skinny pedal and now with each successive fill up, my mpg is getting better and better.

My buddy has the same car He gets close to 600 miles on a tank. I wish I got that, but I'll never get rid of my Jeep!
Superchips helped a lot. I have 35in KM2's, and the Superchips make it drive like it did with the stock Rubicon tires. I would PM Gus at ORW. He is good at hooking up forum members with good deals.

I have a 35 mile commute one way. (2008 4-door Auto.)
I'm running 33's and the monitor was sayin' 15-16 mpg on the highway.
I installed a K&N Series 77 CAI and now the monitor says 16 to 16.8.
I put the soft top on, and I'm looking for more weight reduction. I've found if I set the cruise at about 68mph my fuel consumption improves, but the monitor doesn't indicate any difference. I'm going to chart my mileage between fill-ups and see if I can get better. I'm thinking seriously about the Superchips FlashPAK.
I've owned a Toyota Tacoma and a Toyota 4-Runner. This Jeep surpasses both those vehicles in mpg. No comparison off-road. If I have to spend a little more on gas to drive a Jeep, so be it, but I'll try to be thrifty.

Ok this is my list
Ok stage 1
Exaust
Lower 2" from stock
14" tires
Switching out the engine for a hybrid
Cutting 2nd row seating out and only having 1 rear tire
Carbon fiber fairings all over the place specially over tire wells
Extra battery packs for electric only driving
Tow strap in the front to get towed whenever possible
I think I can hit at least 35mpg more if I get towed more
