That's the most accurate response I've seen. I never bothered with gas mileage on any of my jeeps (this is number 6). I didn't buy them for long-term daily driving so the mileage isn't much of an issue. I see it as more of a challenge in finding the right combination of components which yield the optimal solution.

I'm thinking about taking the spare off and keeping a tire repair kit in the Jeep. But I'm also wondering if a snorkel really does help that much to justify the cost.
lol, I was reading that thinking to myself that guy must be from Texas, and I guess I nailed that one on the head. Its like an hour drive anywhere around Dallas.

  1. Run the Superchip in Mileage XS mode
  2. Disabled OD (Is there a steering wheel dance for permanent OD disable?)
  3. Permanently disable ESP (using the steering wheel dance)
  4. Running topless with no A/C.
  5. Using factory fluids until my free oil changes run out (4 left).
  6. Light on the skinny pedal (Trying to maintain RPM's under 2500 at all cost)
  7. Cut off engine at long stop lights or lights where I know the pattern
  8. No idling in parking lots, drive thru's, etc.
I just started the experiment and have been running around 16-17 mpg with about 50/50 city highway. School will be out in June, so I hope the experiment will yield improvements up to 18-20 mpg or so. We'll see.
Good Luck with it, Its crazy all you're doing for just 16-17 lol. But with what you are running I don't think thats all that bad. I don't know how you can run topless with no a/c in the texas summer. I don't know about down south but Dallas feels like someone is just blowing a hair dryer in your face all day long.
That alone is the reason I want to get full metal doors during the months I wouldn't dare take my top down.

My only thing, Idealy I'd love to have like a crap vehicle to use as a gas saver, but right now I can't afford it. My wife is doing her part she has a mini cooper but we both can't use it at the same time.
I'm wasn't looking to turn the Jeep into a hybrid or anything (although...), I just wanted tips to improve 3-4 mpg, that over an 18 gallon tank can put an extra 54-72 miles per tank. And in Texas everything is so far away every bit helps.

We should expect to get somewhere near 17 to 20 mpg with reasonable driving. As for the OP, I have to agree with a lot of other people here. I recently was careful about the skinny pedal and now with each successive fill up, my mpg is getting better and better.
Is the skinny pedal just using it lightly? Or is there an actual skinny pedal?

My buddy has the same car He gets close to 600 miles on a tank. I wish I got that, but I'll never get rid of my Jeep!

Superchips helped a lot. I have 35in KM2's, and the Superchips make it drive like it did with the stock Rubicon tires. I would PM Gus at ORW. He is good at hooking up forum members with good deals.

Is a superchip easy to use/install? What kind do you have?

I have a 35 mile commute one way. (2008 4-door Auto.)
I'm running 33's and the monitor was sayin' 15-16 mpg on the highway.
I installed a K&N Series 77 CAI and now the monitor says 16 to 16.8.
I put the soft top on, and I'm looking for more weight reduction. I've found if I set the cruise at about 68mph my fuel consumption improves, but the monitor doesn't indicate any difference. I'm going to chart my mileage between fill-ups and see if I can get better. I'm thinking seriously about the Superchips FlashPAK.
I've owned a Toyota Tacoma and a Toyota 4-Runner. This Jeep surpasses both those vehicles in mpg. No comparison off-road. If I have to spend a little more on gas to drive a Jeep, so be it, but I'll try to be thrifty.

Ok this is my list

Ok stage 1

Exaust
Lower 2" from stock
14" tires
Switching out the engine for a hybrid
Cutting 2nd row seating out and only having 1 rear tire
Carbon fiber fairings all over the place specially over tire wells
Extra battery packs for electric only driving
Tow strap in the front to get towed whenever possible

I think I can hit at least 35mpg more if I get towed more
