im putting a solid diff guard on my rear axle. (d44 and limited slip) i got two questions. first of all how much oil does the rear take, and also im going with mobil 1 75w-140 sythetic. is this a good oil for the axle, i offroad once or twice a month and i was just wondering what everyones opinion is on this oil. thanks!

That oil will be fine to use. I normally just use regular 85W-90 but in the synthetic 75W-140 will be good to use.

Also don't forget you will need limited slip additive for your trac loc rear end, available from the dealer for about $9 a bottle.

The rear takes 2.25L, or fill to the bottom of the fill hole, plus .1L of limited slip additive for the limited slip differential. And dont get the additive from the dealership, its about $5 at autozone or silimar stores. The service manual says you only need 75w-140 if you plan to pull a trailer around, otherwise go with 80w-90. My question is, why replace the rear differential cover? I ram a lot more ground when Im in ruts with the front one.

The lower lip of stock covers sometimes tend to peel off when dragged over rocks.

I can't remember the capacity of the rear, but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it in the owners manual. And yes, don't forget the friction additive if you have the l/s.
