gear question
just traded in my FJ cruiser for a 2007 wrangler 2 door X and a 2007 unlimited X. I drive the 2 door and my wife drives the 4 door. 2 door has 265/75 16 toyo MT's and 3:21 gears. took it off road for first time yesterday on some old logging roads. had no power at all on even moderate hills, tried to go up one kind of steep hill thought it was going to stall. I am waiting to get new gears in. As I will not go bigger than 285/75 16 in the near future I have been advised to get either 4:10 or 4:56 gears. I know the gear swap will help with highway speed, but how much difference will I see in the off road application, and what gear set is recommended? thanx in advance for the advice
Stickied at the top of the Modified area are some FAQ's. In the Drivetrain section, you will find some great RPM charts. I personally would not pay that kind of coin to regear back to a stock ratio, but plug the numbers in and see what you come up with.
If your on-road performance is decent, you might also look into upgrading to a used Rubicon TCase. They are 4:1, as opposed to the 2.72:1 case you have now.

with Rubi 4:10+33"tire quite happy with power and throttle response, able to use 6th gear quite alot(2300-2400rpm@110km per hour in 6th),getting good fuel econ, and I seem to be able to take most local JK's off a set of lights(as most have less gear and quite a few have bigger tires)
no way 3:23 gears should have been installed in JK,even JK's with 3:73 gears seem weak.If my tires were any bigger I would re-gear to 4:88
