Question Gear swap cost???

Short sweet and to the point

Located near Madison, Wisconsin (If that makes a difference)

Current set-up:

2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
3.6L
6-speed manual transmission
D30 front axle open differential
D44 rear axle limited-slip differential
3.21 gearing
stock 255/75/R17 BFG mud terrains on stock mopar 17x8 rims
2.5" Rock Krawler lift
1.5" wheel spacers

I want to upgrade to 315/75/R16 Duratracs on 16x9 rims.

I'm told my current set-up will not be appropriate for this tire size/rim combination and should upgrade gears. I'm also told it'll do fine.

I want to upgrade to 4.88 gearing.

I'm told by some I need new carriers front and rear, and told by some I only need new front carrier.

I've been quoted $3,000 for new gears, carriers, etc., and labor.

Too much? About right?

What should I be getting and how much should this cost?

Also...ANY suggestions for shops near Madison, Wisconsin for this procedure?

They quoted you over double the cost. They either don't know what they are doing or know exactly what they are doing, meaning raping their customers.

Monopoly or not, screwing your customers is not a garage I would do business with. I paid about 1 plus parts. Buy your own parts and see what mechanic shops are reputable in your area and call them.

I agree it makes me not want to go to that shop. Unfortunately I don't know which parts I'd need to buy and I am trying to find reputable shops.

Crawl where do you live?! Lol

Check out 4ws.com for the parts you need. You will need front and rear ring and pinions with master overhaul kits. Also a carrier I believe just for the front because you have 3.21 gears. Also invest in some lube lockers. Don't forget 4 quarts of gear oil. That way you only need to pay for labor. 8-10 hours at no more than one hundred per hour for a decent shop.

Shop I'm talking to in Indiana said $650 for gears. $150 for front carrier. $600 labor. Needs jeep one day.
