Default gearing

First off I want to apologize for yet another gearing question. But... here it goes, I am a newbie and have an X with the 3.73 gears. I will be putting the RC 2.5" spring lift and 285/70R17 KM2's on shortly. I want to change the gearing to 4.10s. I see a lot of people selling used front and rear sets for around $100. But most of them are for D 44's and im guessing that they wont work in my front 30. I was just wondering if you guys could let me know your thoughts on this... that would be great. What else do I need to do this? Is this even a good idea? Once again Im sorry and hope I didnt sound too much like a tool.... Merry Christmas

Tim

The Dana 44 ring gear is around 1" larger in diameter than the D30 so the gears will not fit.

Much of the cost of regearing is labor.
Going from a 3.73 to a 4.10 will not make much difference.

Why possibly pay for the labor twice?

Are you planning on doing the install yourself?

If not, that is an aweful lot of money to drop for going up a single gear ratio. The gears will be cheap enough, but expect the labor to run around $1000.

Here is a re-gearing writeup you can read through to get an idea of what all is involved.

IMO i would go with 4.56 (if avaliable) or possibly even 4.88. you would pay for install once and alow yourself to upgrade to 35s later on. im guessing you wanted 4.10 since that is whats for sale on the used section. personally i would take the time to save up and do right the the first time around. you will also need a reprogramer to adjust for tire size (dealer can only do 32s), fix speedometer, and adjust for new gearing.

You're taking advice from people who don't even bother to ask if you're running an auto or manual?

He was talking about going from 3.73 all the way up to 4.10. Why would transmission type matter? It is wasted money, which he has already found out for himself.

I think you need to do some more research bud, there's plenty of threads on this, just gotta spend some time searching for them.

going from 3.73 is only one ratio change, like was mentioned earlier, do more research and get what your going to need further down the line to cut your costs.

I wouldn't even bother looking at 4.10's go with either 4.56 or 4.88's, you'll be happier down the line when you most probably upgrade to 35's

the little search button at the top is your friend.... use it, good luck with what ever you choose in the end

After clicking that friendly little button I have decided that I will be buying a set of 4.88s which should make the Jeep happy with 33s and 35s. Thank you for the help and saving me some cash!

Because depending on the transmission, 4.56's and even 4.88's are just as big a waste of money as the 4.10's.
