Default Gearing with a d30 front

I'm going to get 35" tires for my 2010 2dr jk auto and I was told that 5.13 gearing would be best for this setup I will be strengthening my front axel with the kit from artec but I was just wondering will the 5.13 in a d30 cause any problems I've heard this could be a week combination can someone explain this to me

The ring is the same size, so going numerically higher on gear ratio means less teeth. The result is less teeth in contact with the pinion at any given point. So you are increasing the load per tooth. On a D30, 5.13 does become a fairly weak combination, but it's all in how you wheel and what you run. You can pick up a new crate d44 with 5.13 for a little over $2k. Plus, it has a locker in it and you can sell your axle for $500-$700. Something to think about.

I cryo treated my gears just so I wouldn't have this problem, I think you will be fine. Just don't be an animal with the gas pedal. Good luck

The basics of it involve sending them out to someone who gives them a bath in liquid nitrogen at about -300*F or some crazy cold temperature. It changes the properties of the metal and makes them much stronger. I've heard it costs about $50. I plan on doing this when I regear, even though I'll only be running 4.56s

I haven't seen a huge number of broken gears reported here. It seems much more likely to be a broken shaft or joint before the gears. But when gear problems are reported, more often you will see comments indicating an install error rather than overall gear strength. And I guess if you think about it, if you get into a situation bad enough to trash the 5.13's, what are the odds that 4.88's, or even 4.56's, would not also have busted the teeth off?

If you want 5.13's, get them. Just drive like you realize that you have a d30 up there...

Correct ^^^^^

There is a guy on here named HeatTreater ( he is in my friends section ) he owns a Heatreating and Cryogenic treating company, he does cryo treating for multiple KOH ultra 4 buggies. It's a cheap insurance policy if you ask me.

That's the cost if you want to regear it too. Two people I know just picked up new crate axles for around $1600. I added $500 to the number since the OP would need a regear. It's an ebay business. I believe the guy is based in OH.
