No that is not normal.

Gears and bearings around $700 labor on the high side is 400 per axle

total of $1500 and that is high.

i know there for awhile off road evo (located in CA) was doing the 999.00 re-gear special....so 2,000 seems a bit steep.

EDIT: that included gears and install. they may still be doing it for that price, i am not sure.

Yeah that is pretty high....
I got the gears and install kits from Northridge, and then I paid $450 for the install from a local mechanic friend.

Most of the 4x4 shops I called are quoting $250-350 per axle for labor. New carriers are pretty cheap around $60. You should be able to find the total package for $1500-1700.

Randy's has some good reading material on choosing a repair shop to do gears as well as some guidelines for prices.

http://www.ringpinion.com/ContentFra...epair_Shop.inc

http://www.ringpinion.com/ContentFra...oo_Much%7e.inc

in there he has some guidelines that list aprox hours.
"Install ring & pinion, and bearings and seals if needed: 5 to 7 hrs"

the price will obviously range depending on the labor rates of your area, and that can varry GREATLY. I know some of your guys don't have to pay as much per hour as we do here in the northeast. the average shop rate around her can be 85-100 per hour.
6x85=$510 (per axle!)
if you are lucky to have only a 50/hr rate, then your saving a ton of money!
6x50=300 !!!

so you really can't just go on price, you need to know how many hours they are billing you for, and the rate they charge. i bet if you look at 'book time' on a rear end overhaul and rebuild, its alot more hours. And also keep in mind, that if a dealership using booktime is caluclating replacing gears, they ARN'T figuring in the added time of setting up aftermarket gears at a higher ratio, because that DOES take more time than just replacing whats in there with the same ratio.
