Default Good or Bad to shift gears in Auto???

It it good or bad to shift through the gears in automatic? Like 1st, 2nd, O/D off, the O/D on? Or should I just leave in it drive?

Just Curious why you'd want to do that. Are you doing this on road or off road.

Everything I have read has pretty much always said that the main, and only real purpose, is for towing. If you are pulling a safe heavy load and need to maintain speed, like on a steep incline or decline, shifting the auto trans to a lower gear will help maintain that speed without shifting to the next gear. Thus preventing the loss of momentum on an incline, or preventing increased speed on a decline.

Is it bad? I don't think it will do any short term damage, but prolonged operation like that may have long term effects since the auto trans was not designed to be shifted like that. With the exception of the manumatic trans.

No need to shift through the gears as you would a standard.

Managing the transmission is another subject.
I do it all the time.
O/D off and on, on the highway, because the control module usually waits too long to shift to 3rd going up a long hill.
O/D off all the time around town, and on hilly roads up to 55 mph.
In town, I'll often drop it to 2nd to slow down on a decline rather than ride the brakes all the way down.

The shift lever and the O/D button are there to be used.
Done properly, it may even cause less shifting than would happen automatically.

Having OD off through town, would that cause less mileage? I haven't really used the button much since the super chips and viper throttle body.. but do you think it must still be used.. with all the stuff done to my jeep... Lift, wheels, tires, gears and what not

I haven't noticed a difference in mpg. My JK is on stock tune, suspension, and tires. With your mods, my technique may not be best.
You were asking if shifting the automatic is good or bad. I think it's not bad, and may even be good for it, and the engine.
Like I mentioned, though, there is no need to "shift through the gears" like you would do on a manual transmission.

Some time ago, I read all I could on if this was bad or not for trannies not designed for "tap shifting". There seems to be no broad consensus I could find from all the "experts" out there.

As long as your not slamming your drive train or redlining your engine with downshifts, I cannot see how the tranny really cares between the computer doing it or you commanding it through the shifter.

I really have no need to manual shift it, but once in a while I do just for fun if I want to hold a gear on purpose. Has not seemed to harm it so far.........

And for what it is worth, I use a B&M Quicksilver rachet shifter on my old Ranger in which is stuffed an AOD auto tranny and 302 motor. Racheted that thing all the time back when it was my DD...tranny still works. Too bad the old 84's frame is finally going.......

However, if you operate something complex like a vehicle outside the norm......longevity sometimes involves luck IMO. If you cannot afford to fix/don't like risk, don't shift it like it is a stick because your only doing it for "fun".

If yu don't shift it the Jeep will. Shifting gears is shifting gears. Now if your running around down shifting the heck out of it and winding the RPM's way up its not gonna be good for the engine or the trans.
